He is a provocateur, both in his films and in interviews, but I don’t think he is entirely sincere when he speaks about his own work, and what is on screen, and what he describes, are obviously different. Maybe it’s more gamesmanship by the eccentric von Trier, a brilliant director that you can never trust when he speaks. I am not sure why Lars von Trier dedicated his new film Antichrist to Andrei Tarkovsky, that wonderfully weird, religiously rigid Russian filmmaker, when the film is so clearly inspired by a Scandinavian like von Trier, Ingmar Bergman. Even local art houses, preoccupied showing indie films with Oscar aspirations, look the other way. Needless to say, "Antichrist" is not being shown in IMAX 3-D or at a suburban multiplex. It is their logical conclusion, ripped like a bandage from our collective conscience. I cannot recommend "Antichrist," but in a culture that hemorrhages death and torture nightly on shows like "24" or "C.S.I.," I can understand it. "You don't have to understand me," he purrs, "just trust me."īut his treatment of her is condescending and emotionally detached, and his tone is superior in a way that suggests a portrait of gender inequality in microcosm and a reflection of crimes committed against women in general. But long before that, von Trier establishes the shaky foundation of a precariously unbalanced relationship, in which a detached therapist husband is treating his traumatized wife.

This bizarre and grueling film about a couple coping with the death of their child - which occurs in the opening, graphic sex scenes, shot in a lustrous black and white as a soprano and harpsichord perform a movement from Handel's "Rinaldo" - is as emotionally raw as an Ingmar Bergman film and as surreal as anything by David Lynch.īut rather than play chess, death whistles past the graveyard as this pair - played by Appleton native Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg - bury themselves in grief, pain and despair, words that are used as chapter titles within the film and are referred to as "The Three Beggars."ĭanish writer-director Lars von Trier is an odd duck and an acquired taste, to say the least, and is a co-founder of the Dogma 95 movement, whose rules of aesthetic purity are not the only things he flagrantly violates here. "Antichrist" looks as hard on its actors as it is on its audience.
